OK, everyone knows the story of Passover. Audiences will bring their own agenda to the film and will take away what they will but in my view it is strong enough to work as a accessible telling for those with faith and a solid story for those without. OK it is a bit dark for some young children but I think it is not unnecessarily so.

Overall then a professional and engaging animated film. Not too sure about Martin and Short the film doesn't really make the most of them for obvious reasons and they come across as being left out in the open by the material. Pfeffier, Bullock, Mirren, Stewart, Goldblum and Glover are a bit more cast for their voices but they work well, with each providing weight just by their voice work. Fiennes is better as he has more to work with and less fear of upsetting people I guess. Kilmer is perhaps a bit too overawed by his characters but he is still effective enough. The voice cast work reasonably well even if they do come over as being stars rather than really performing. The animation has of course been surpassed by technology but it is the quality that stands up, with depth and atmosphere being delivered rather than just technical value.
It has dark elements and it cannot get away from that, but it delivers these in such a way that is menacing without overdoing the scares I do believe that children need to have darkness in their films and should not be unreasonably shielded from it. Others have advised that this film is not suitable for children but I think this depends on your view.
Outside of this area though the film still works as an engaging film even if you do not believe that it is a true story. I'm not necessarily saying this from a biblical point of view but on that regard it does provide an accessible telling of a key story and I know that several local churches block booked cinemas at time of release to show their congregation. To some children this will weaken the film as it is less "fun" however for my money it makes it a more reliable and sturdy film. Wisely perhaps the film errs on the side of caution and delivers the story mostly straight, with only a few adventure or comic asides. On one hand we have the pressure of genre conventions requiring a modern jokey air that sees exciting chariot races and amusing minor characters but then on the other we have a story that deals with the death of children and plagues punishing civilians over the hard heart of their ruler.

However, returning to his brother Rameses with this request provokes only anger and stubbornness, leading to a series of plagues from God to try and change the mind of the Egyptian ruler. When God speaks to him his destiny is decided to lead the chosen people out of captivity and into the promised land.
Moses grows up as the son of Pharaoh and brother of Rameses but it is not until he accidentally kills an Egyptian for beating a Hebrew slave that he discovers his true identity that of a Hebrew orphan taken in by the Royals as a baby. All in all, a superb animated film, which isn't to be missed. I tend to worry about A Listers in animated films, but this, people, is a truly talented voice cast, who are truly excellent when they are given a good script, which was exactly what they got. The voice talents are superlative, here we have Val Kilmer, Ralph Fiennes, Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Pfeiffer, Sandra Bullock, Steve Martin and Martin Short voicing fairly complex and beautifully-drawn characters flawlessly. There is nothing wrong with the story at all, other that it is complicated, but it is a biblical story after all. "When You Believe" is a standout, as is the title song. The songs and music(by Hans Zimmer) are phenomenal. The animation is jaw-dropping, especially in The Plagues scene, which is still for me visually and musically one of the most haunting and evocative scenes in an animated film, and the part with the Red Sea splitting.

I could not fault this movie whatsoever, and I am shocked at the low rating.
